Spore and Seed is a small but mighty 1.5 acre farm in Baltimore County, MD. We are committed to providing our local community with high quality fresh cut flowers, dried flower products and mushrooms grown in a way that honors nature. We sell to florists, at farmers markets, grocery stores and provide flowers for weddings and events. We sell mushrooms to local restaurants and at farmers markets.
We operate our farm as stewards of the land and as such follow organic growing practices and use low impact farming methods. We feel very grateful to interact with the natural world each and every day and try our best to create an environment that supports the flora, fauna and fungi that existed before us.
Who we are
Courtney, the business owner and lead lady farmer has a long history in horticulture and agriculture. Raised in Harford Co. MD she played in the woods and learned the ins and outs of country life on her grandparents farm on the Eastern Shore. She graduated with a degree in Environmental Studies from Salisbury University and worked for the Universities Horticulture Department during her tenure there. Knowing farming was the future but not totally sure how to go about it she spent the next 6 years bouncing around the country from peony fields in Alaska to the rolling hills of Western NC and back to Baltimore the whole time always finding those fields of flowers and piecing together a way to make it work. So here we are after almost a decade of working and managing flower farms at the end of our very first season as Spore and Seed, and we so look forward to a lifetime of flowers fields and bird songs.
Ben is the lead mushroom grower, in house fix-everything-dude and cheerleader. Ben is a full-time glass blower and grows mushrooms for our farmers market and restaurants in his “spare time”. He likes flowers a lot and can even put a mean bouquet together but farming isn’t his favorite so we let him be a goblin in the mushroom warehouse.
